Inside the Moscow Kremlin -- a sprawling fortress -- is the State Kremlin Palace, where we heard President Vladimir Putin. The hall was built from 1959 to 1961 on space cleared by destroying several antique Orthodox cathedrals and was for years the site of annual Communist Party conventions. Today it is primarily used for cultural events, including Bolshoi Ballet performances while the Bolshoi's main building is being renovated.
