The view from my 10th-floor room in the President Hotel, originally built by the Communist Party for visiting dignitaries and top party officials, and now operated by the presidency of the Russian Federation. The magnificent statue is of Peter the Great, and the river is the Moskva, which splits at this point into a main body and a canal. The gold-domed church at upper right is a reconstruction of one torn down by Stalin to make way for an eighth skyscraper (never built).
